AI is going to have a major beneficial effect on extended reality (XR), like augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR) and mixed reality (MR), says Alvin Wang Graylin, China President and Global VP of Corporate Development at HTC at Golf Business. “Motion tracking, hand tracking, voice interactions, spatial scanning, and procedural world generation would all not be possible without AI,” adds Graylin.

When combined with extended reality (XR) technologies such as augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR) and mixed reality (MR), AI opens a world of creative possibilities but raises new issues related to privacy, manipulation, and safety.

“AI will solve the biggest issue the XR space faces by democratising content creation and bringing its cost to near zero,” said Alvin Wang Graylin, China President and Global VP of Corporate Development at HTC – who will be speaking at DeepFest 2024.

“And immersive technologies will enable unlimited virtual worlds to give an outlet for the energy and renewed purpose to the billions of displaced workers that AI will create in the coming decade due to its massive gains in productivity.”

The promise of XR is fueling predictions for an array of once-unthinkable possibilities within the fast-emerging metaverse. “By 2030 people could be spending more time in the metaverse than in the real world,” KPMG said in a report while projecting that people will be applying for jobs, earning a living, meeting with friends and shopping using the virtual capabilities of the metaverse…

A study by PwC revealed that the use of AR and VR for soft skills training was four times faster than in a traditional classroom setting.

Together with AI, XR will deliver physical interactions dynamically and in real-time. The innovative technology will achieve this by overlaying digital elements in the real-world environment, enabling businesses to deliver contextually pertinent just-in-time data, support, and information to people who are navigating complex experiences.

“AI-related technologies have been a major part of almost all aspects of enabling immersive computing to be possible. Motion tracking, hand tracking, voice interactions, spatial scanning, and procedural world generation would all not be possible without AI,” said Graylin.

From enhancing productivity to transforming customer experiences, XR presents an array of benefits for businesses looking to gain a competitive edge in the market. Companies can use the technology to virtually design and test new products and experiences much faster and at a fraction of the cost and to deliver immersive and personalised entertainment experiences that can’t be replicated in the real world.

China’s changing approach of data and AI – Winston Ma

China’s industrial policy towards data and Artificial Intelligence (AI) is changing, writes Winston Ma, adjunct professor at the New York University at Europeansting.com. “The fresh approach could be a model for developing economies to follow — but the nature of AI innovation and expansion means they also risk being left behind.”

Now the Generative AI boom in 2023 is further driving Chinese companies — in about every sector — to invest heavily in research and development of the latest digital technologies. They are rushing to learn how new digital technologies, also including the internet of things, blockchain, cloud computing and data analytics (dubbed “iABCD”) can be integrated into their businesses to unlock value from non-traditional angles.

This powerful trend is real and accelerating. In early January, China’s 17 government departments and ministries issued a three-year “Data Element X” action plan, one month after the “Data X” concept was introduced. The action plan will promote “high-level application of data”, highlighting “high quality” data supply, data circulation, data analytics and data security.

For example, enterprise leaders use data and metrics to assess performance, identify gaps and update plans. In almost all companies, this is historical data about what has already happened, and leaders may get away with that (the figurative equivalent of driving forward with your eyes fixed on the rearview mirror) when the world is stable and business conditions are certain.

But today’s tumultuous post-pandemic world is riven with macroeconomic, geopolitical and technology disruptions. In addition to the need for more real-time data, the businesses further need the predictive capabilities of AI that can help them anticipate and shape the future. As such, the new data capabilities of businesses and industries will result in more profound transformation than from the mere addition of internet.

In short, the main task of “Data X” is to activate the data market, enabling data to realize its full value. This happens at a time when data is created at an increasing pace. In addition to the data creation by the existing digital economy, in August 2022, the number of connected “things” (mobile IoT devices) exceeded that of connected “people” for the first time in China. More data will be created by “things” in the future than “humans”.

How China has been outspending on supercomputers – Winston Ma

In the ongoing tech war between China and the US, China has been building up an advantage in spending vastly on the development of supercomputers, says innovation expert Winston Ma in IBTimes.

IBTimes:

While it is unclear how far China has advanced in its goal, Winston Ma, adjunct professor at NYU’s Law School on sovereign wealth funds and author of “The Digital War – How China’s Tech Power Shapes the Future of AI, Blockchain and Cyberspace,” told IBT that the Chinese government has consistently increased R&D spending on supercomputers “in pursuit of major breakthroughs.”

“In the new digital economy where the computing power fuels all activities like the oil of the past, supercomputer is at the frontier of U.S.-China tech rivalry, because to out-compete is to out-compute,” Ma noted…

[Ma said] Beijing’s supercomputing power will “significantly help China to develop AI/machine learning capabilities.” With AI’s ability to learn from large datasets paired with massive computer power, Beijing may find it easier to tackle some of its most difficult economic, scientific and military challenges.

Why AR is going to limit the number of screens you look at – Alvin Wang Graylin

The number of screens you look at haven increased over the years, but that number is at a tipping point as AR takes over, said Alvin Wang Graylin, China president of smartphone maker HTC, earlier this week at the Augmented World Expo (AWE) Asia 2023 event in Singapore, according to the Register.

The Registers:

“Right now, there’s so many screens in our lives, and the natural thinking is that we’re going to keep having a lot more screens,” Graylin told the Augmented World Expo (AWE) Asia 2023 event in Singapore today. “And with this trend, you’re thinking, hey, it’s going to be another five or ten screens over the next few years. No, it’s actually the opposite.”

“Where we are going now is using the most natural interfaces that we have – our hands, our eyes and mouth, our bodies, and natural ways of how we interact with the physical world,” he told the audience.

“What we’re going to find is that by having a device on your head, more and more of those screens are going to be replaced by that device on your face. And that device at some point will maybe even get embedded as a chip in your body,” he added.

As the gabfest’s name implies, he’s suggesting a transition to life lived in extended reality (XR) – probably beaming out from a single screen worn on your noggin to replace the collection of smartphones, computers, televisions, tablets and e-readers we use today. The myriad screens in public spaces are also at risk.

Graylin predicted the tech to make XR happen is happening.

“Over the last year, we can see new generations of products coming,” Graylin told the conference. He described next-gen XR products as thin and light – and becoming the new norm as more and more screen-bearing devices are replaced with headgear.

Whereas American artificial technologies have pretty much had free rein, China has already mandated that it will require a security review of generative AI services before they’re allowed to operate. But many feel that more stringent controls would not hamper China’s AI but instead improve it. “Some of the tight measures may enhance its safety and ethical use,” says Ashley Dudarenok. “Beijing’s focus on user privacy, content discrimination, and model development demonstrates their commitment to responsible AI practices and aims to establish clear boundaries for AI development without stifling innovation too much, allowing companies to innovate within defined limits. This proactive approach instills confidence in AI technology and encourages wider adoption.”

How TikTok excels in hooking its users with AI – Matthew Brennan

Bytedance, the mother company of Douyin and TikTok, became the first to use artificial intelligence to hook their users in an unprecedented way, says China internet expert Matthew Brennan to Play Crazy Game. The TikTok algorithms turns its users into addicts, in the same way drugs do, says Brennan.

According to Matthew Brennan, a technology expert and author of the book Attention Factory, Chinese ByteDance, creator of TikTok, knew very well what she was doing when she developed the app.

The author claims that TikTok uses one of the most sophisticated recommendation algorithms in the world and that its resounding success did not happen by chance. “Living in China, I saw firsthand the growth of Douyin (TikTok’s name in that country) in 2017, and the impact it had on everyone around me,” he says.

Behind the application is a highly efficient technological engine, capable of automatically auditing the millions of videos published, categorizing them one by one with keywords. First, each video is released to a few hundred active users for a kind of test. Then there is a crossing of information, the so-called metrics, which map the number of views, “likes”, comments, average viewing duration, shares, etc. All to identify the most popular content and send it to the next level, where it will be released to thousands of active users. The process repeats itself and, according to the result, the content continues to be sent to the next level, released to ever-larger audiences, reaching into the millions.

“ByteDance was the first Chinese internet company to fully dedicate itself to the then-new recommendation technology and to commit to the difficult task of creating a tool that challenges the status quo of human curation. The initial gamble paid off. The foundations of TikTok’s success were laid many years before the app itself was built, and it’s no coincidence that ByteDance was the company that created it,” says Brennan.

All the success of TikTok comes down to the recommendation tool, as it is what hooks the user to content that they like, giving them the false feeling of controlling what they see by moving their thumb up, triggering an infinite scroll bar, where you lose track of time.

By falling into recommendations, the user submits to what the application wants him to see. The more the tool gets it right, the more likely the user is to stay online, ingesting the little reward pills that, like any other drug, will become increasingly irresistible and uncontrollable.

To better understand how the chances of the tool getting it right are high, making the content addictive, we can make an analogy of how recommendations between humans are and how the tool works. Normally, when we read a book that we believe is of interest to someone, we recommend reading it, but buying the book, actually reading it and giving us feedback is a long process, which is 100% at the person’s discretion, and may even not work. in nothing.

The algorithm doesn’t work that way. Brennan explains that it has so-called “machine learning”, that is, it has the ability to learn by tracking user behavior. “What makes TikTok so addictive is that it learns what you like and what you don’t. And it does it very quickly because in one minute you can watch five or six videos. In that time, you have to discard or watch the video, revealing your preferences. In this way, ByteDance can get a lot of information in a very short time”, clarifies the author and adds: “It is an extreme customization”.

The way the algorithm works, the control that the user has over what he sees is practically non-existent. While the person thinks they are making their own choices, they do not realize that they are only providing information on the “substances” that should be put in their addictive reward pills.
